NOTICE: Scanner feed will go down for a short period of time in the morning of 12/14/2024 due to it being moved into the basement. Down time should be brief, hopefully 15 minutes or fewer. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Note: Looking for a couple of avid listeners to help me get alerts up when something interesting is happening. I listen a lot, but not all the time. Please send me an email at feed@marasch.com if you listen a lot and are interested in helping. Also you can reach me on Facebook.
This is SARA, all Linn County Multicast frequencies.
Focus is on Linn County scanner activity only. This is a windows computer running four SDR's running SDRTrunk.

Log:
12/13/2024 2121: Scanner was switched to a raspberry pi 5. Watching the feed closely tonight to make sure it can keep up. Scanner will also be moved into the basement tomorrow morning early. Downtime should be less than 15 minutes hopefully.
12/11/2024 ~1845: (Entry made on 12/12) Getting ready to move the feed computer to the basement and feed might be moved to a dedicated Raspberry Pi 5 as the computer that it's running on now is also now running DVR. I'd rather have that on a separate machine. The RPi 5 maxed out CPU when things got busy, some artifacts on feed, but the processor was throttling as the power supply was insufficient. Will try again when new power supply arrives Friday. The switchover causes about 20 seconds of downtime on the feed (2x). Sorry to those who have to restart their listening if their app doesn't automatically reconnect. The RPi 5 uses much less power, will be connected directly to my fiber modem, and will have a dedicated UPS, so power outages won't impact the feed unless iMon goes down as well.
12/6/2024 0702: After 60,254 calls going out to the feed, and over 100,000 calls uploaded to the Calls system, I had to reboot as my remote access went away. I'd say we're pretty stable with good uptime!
11/28/2024 1114: Now we're on Facebook.
11/21/2024 1810: More than one listener has expressed the desire to have the Jail and Airport taken off the feed. Your wish is my command. If you would like to listen to those, please consider the Calls feed as I am providing the calls still on there. I don't think there are any apps yet for Calls, reach out to your favorite developer of scanner apps and tell them you need Broadcastify Calls in an app!
I am adding in the ISICS R6 Call 61 as there's a lot of inter-agency stuff on there.
My experiment with providing an ISICS feed and Calls is over, and a failure. That tower is too far away to get a consistently high quality feed.
11/19/2024 2224: Feed went down again! No idea. Ugh!
11/19/2024 0521: Sorry for the four hours of downtime. No idea what happened. Computer was on, but not responsive.
11/13/2024 0500: Another quick reset of software. Added 5th SDR for streaming ISICS. Will put up ISICS on Calls system hopefully today. I will switch from the SARA mirror of ISP to the ISICS so that we can have unit numbers, and hopefully the audio won't cut off early on transmissions anymore. Expect also another multi-county feed for ISICS in your favorite streaming app.
11/11/2024 1331: Quick reset of software, now running Beta 3. Beta 2 may have had issues with patch channel numbering.
11/3/2024 1331: Two quick restarts of the software. Radios now have active cooling.
10/31/2024 2136: Our internet slowed down to roughly 10Mbps. Had to reboot modem. Sorry for a few minutes of downtime.
10/30/2024: Paging to county fire and ambulance units should now be heard. Now streaming all calls from radio ID's 5700001-5700005, no matter what channel. They put those pages out on PATCH channels, which I do not normally stream (too much activity from other counties). Thanks for the request, listener B.F., and thanks to those on radioreference.com who helped me out.
10/24/2024 0516: Feed now running 0.6.1-beta 2.
10/14/2024 0723: Feed went down at 0630. Why? No idea. Swapped Windows drive back in because Linux didn't automatically re-start the app. Put in a new amplifier, signal to noise is almost ideal now. Should be fewer dropped calls. Looking into killing Windows update.
10/13/2024 1120: Switched computer to Linux. Brief glitch to stream when switching over to temporary computer, once while switching back, then once when sdrtrunk locked up. I'm hoping the lockup was due to hot swapping a radio, which appears at least somewhat feasible in Linux. I have some linux stuff to do so I can remote access and some other tasks, but that shouldn't impact listeners. Edit: Also 57130 turned off as only alerts go on there, and they are duplicates of 57131.
10/9/2024 0544: Windows rebooted itself and was telling me I need OneDrive. UGH!!! Sorry for 30 minutes or so of downtime.
10/7/2024 2057: Some of the talkgroups are now highlighted in blue. Do yourself a favor and get a premium Broadcastify account and click on one of those. The "Calls" feature on Broadcastify is well worth the price. Also, brought back both CRFD fire department dispatch frequencies. I need to study to make sure I'm not out anything by removing one of them.
10/5/2024 1725: Big changes today. We are now on an antenna external to the house. There have been times where some calls have been dropped, hoping that ends that. Was sneaking in the transition when yet one more USB cable went flakey. Never buying that brand again. Software crashed, required software restart. One more change coming with a notch filter on its way from overseas, at which point I might also hook up a low noise amplifier. Estimated 2 weeks for that change.
9/30/2024 1954: The dreaded channels stuck in teardown... Had to restart. Trying Heterodyne tuning mode because it's supposed to have a bit more gain built into it. Sorry for the prime time restart of the app, but we were losing calls. Ugh. We'll get this yet.
9/30/2024 0715: Each radio now has a unique serial number. I now have full confidence that my best tuner is always on the control channel. Also configured my laptop as a backup streamer for maintenance or should this computer die. Sorry, had to briefly take down for around 10 seconds twice as I switched. What else do I have to do? Cable management, and the hope that the fan on this computer doesn't bother my son when he comes back from college. It's in his room. I think things are now how I want them, strong signal on all radios, strongest signal on radio with control channel, back-up laptop in place... Hopefully now will be streaming for months straight with no interruptions. (knock on wood)
9/29/2024 2103: Each radio back to having its own antenna. I think there are fewer cutouts. Sorry, had to restart the stream this afternoon because something locked the radios when I was adjusting gang. At 2103, I enabled a check box for normalizing audio. Let's see how that sounds - I'm not sure if it will affect the feed, but some calls are much quieter than others. Will disable if it sounds bad.
9/25/2024 2225: Removed DPS LAW 2A and 5C as they are dispatched from Des Moines and Cedar Falls. Kept 2D and 3D as they are Cedar Rapids dispatched. Trying a different antenna configuration, tonight is one antenna for Radio 1 on top of the dresser, and one upside down from the curtain rod for Radios 2-4. LOL. WiFi was moved to battery backup.
9/25/2024 0615: Replaced 2 USB cables. Can now move around the SDR's without losing tuners. Had to reboot for a new WiFi dongle to get onto the battery backed-up router. Sorry, everyone! Unfortunately this dongle restarts whenever it starts to connect. I am afraid I'm pulling too much power out of my USB ports? Will try a powered USB3 hub sometime soon. For now, feed appears stable so I can go to work. Not anticipating any more reboots anytime soon. (Knock on wood.)
9/24/2024 22:50: These SDR's are scorching hot. Put heatsinks on them and one of them crashed and would not restart without stopping the feed. I think a USB cable is bad. Sorry for about a minute of downtime.
9/23/2024: New computer now on a UPS. Sorry for the minute or so downtime after 6am, installed Windows Subsystem for Linux so I can do things the way I'm used to: in Linux. That required a reboot. Feed is also now going through my router that is also on a UPS, but that's on the other side of the house, so I needed an external WiFi antenna. Good news is, if power goes out, we should continue running for an estimated 2 hours. I think things should now be stable and no further outages planned. 0643: UGH! While I was watching, my new WiFi card disconnected me. We are now connected twice via WiFi and once via Ethernet. Power outages are a concern, will focus on that some other day. 1038: What the heck is going on? The PATCH channels are repeating, took them off.
9/22/2024: Stream moved to new computer. Computer is an HP, Core i5-7500T. Old computer was hitting 100% CPU utilization periodically when the only thing running was sdrTrunk. New computer peaks at 35% utilization. Some dropouts were happening briefly when it hit 100%. Feed should be better. Sorry for restarts.
9/20/2024: Sorry for a couple of brief dropouts of the feed, but we now have a bunch of alpha tags for the "FROM: " field. Please send corrections and additions my way. Perl script, one alias per radio. Inefficient, but it works. Thanks, Tim, for the list!
9/19/2024: Linn County Public Safety feed comes up, Cedar Rapids North Feed goes down. Talked to old provider as his feed will go down this weekend. Update 20:52: Off to a great start feed and Call node both went out to lunch for almost an hour. Sorry everyone.
9/16/2024: Application accepted.
9/15/2024: Application for the new Linn County Public Safety feed sent.
---History from Cedar Rapids North Feed---
9/12/2024: Upgrades coming. I am primarily focused on the Calls Platform right now. I'm expanding to have four SDR's. If you haven't checked out Calls, do yourself a favor and do it! It makes feeds that are more personalized (like this one is for me). On Calls I'm sharing many of the SARA Talkgroups. More changes are coming. Hold tight.
9/9/2024: Power On!!! Two SDR radios on a budget computer: Beelink Mini PC, Mini S12 Pro Intel 12th N100(Up to 3.4GHz), 16GB DDR4 500GB M.2 PCIE SSD, Mini Desktop Computer. This computer was supposed to be used for a Minecraft server for the kids, but I found that I'm too deep in iMon internet routers to do hosting. I've been thinking it would be nice to have a scanner feed that is focused only on North side. I want to be able to follow things more easily instead of being overwhelmed. So here we go. You all might like it too. Or you might not. Got up to 6 listeners, but then my computer got in a rough state and stopped broadcasting. Will hopefully get that worked out!
